Driving conditions in Finland are very different compered to other countries in world. About half of year we have winter weather. Especially in Northern Finland winter time is cold, dark and it is long. Driver have to consider driving safety issues and have to be in good condition to drive.
WINTERWe use winter tires always in winter time. Most drivers have studded winter tires. Those are prohibited in most countries except Sweden (might have limited areas), Norway (might have limited areas), Russia (need to have warning sign behind the car) and Estonia. Studded tires are good on icy roads but those also destroy asphalt. You can only use those in winter time and there are some streets with no driving studded tires in city centers.
Roads are cleaned soon after snowing but sometimes in country side you might find roads full of snow. Normal passenger car can drive over soft wet snow that is 10 cm high. Dry cold snow might be 20 cm - 30 cm high and it is possible to drive trough.
DARKNESSBecause Finland is so north we have long dark winter time. In northers Lappland you can't see any sun light almost in two months. To drive safely in darkness you must know how to operate correctly with high beams. Use high beam lights always when there are no street lights or any road users infront of you. Switch to low beams (dipped beam lights) before you meet on coming car or if you drive behind other car. There are many dangerous in darkness but you just can´t see those.
